CATnip runs on your computer. This page lists everything it sends anywhere else, what each one carries, and how to switch it off.

The short version

Your translation text

When you ask CATnip for help, it sends the AI the segment you are on, a few segments before and after it (three each side unless you change it), your notes for the project, and any reference material you attached. Full Review and Full Translate send the whole document, in parts. Where it goes depends on how you set CATnip up:

Web searches are off unless you turn them on. When they are on, the search words can contain words from your document. None of this passes through CATnip's server. Whether a client allows AI on their text is between you and them.

The usage record, only if you say yes

The first time you start CATnip it asks whether it may keep a record of how the app is used and send it to us, so we can see what works and what fails on computers we have never seen. Nothing is recorded until you answer, and nothing at all, not even on your computer, while the answer is no.

What it records: when CATnip starts and how it ends; which buttons, menus and hotkeys you use; whether each write into memoQ worked and how long it took; for each job and each AI request, roughly how large it was, how long it took and whether it failed; which settings you change; errors CATnip did not handle; how it is set up; your memoQ, Windows and CATnip versions, keyboard languages and screen size; and the date, but not the time of day.

What it never records: your text (source, translation, notes, prompts or replies); names of projects, files, clients, AI keys or note sets; folder paths; the message of any error. Every item is a number, a yes/no, or a word from a fixed list, so the record cannot hold anything you typed. In the app you can see every item exactly as it is recorded.

Where it goes: only to CATnip's own server, with no analytics company, under a random ID that is not linked to your name or licence. We do not keep your internet address (the companies that carry the connection may keep network records we cannot see).

How long: 90 days. After that only totals remain, with the ID removed, for up to 24 months. Copies inside the server's backups are gone within 30 days.

Changing your mind: switch it off at any time in Settings, and tick "Also delete what was already sent" to have the server delete it. We keep a count that a deletion happened, not whose.

Messages you send us

The app's "Tell us" box sends us what you type, your email address if you give one (only so we can answer), and your CATnip and Windows versions. Nothing from your translation is attached; only what you type yourself. A message is not part of the usage record and cannot be linked to it.

It reaches us through CATnip's server and an email delivery service (Resend), which keeps a copy for 30 days. The server keeps messages for up to two years. To have one removed sooner, write to us quoting the code the app showed you when you sent it, and we will delete it from the server and from our mailbox.

Update check

Once a day CATnip asks our update server which version is newest. It sends nothing about you, your work or your copy of CATnip: no ID, no version, no computer name. The server keeps no log of these requests. You can switch this off in Settings; "Check now" in About still works. Nothing is installed without your click.

Your AI keys

OpenAI keys you enter are stored in Windows' own Credential Manager on your computer. CATnip never sends them anywhere except to OpenAI, with your requests.

This website

No cookies, no analytics, no fonts or scripts from anyone else. The server keeps no log of visits.
